The "Basement"!

After the children run into the long grass, and find the basement doors to escape, (which will just be on its own? surrounded by veery tall grass? )... what is down in the basement ;O?
Is it a passage down into an almost pich black dark cave? A real basement of a house? Something else ;D? Bananas?

i was thinking the forest could change, as it gets scarier, so  darker more misty and maybe turn to pines, cliche i know but they are pretty scary.
